How do you decide what to blog about? For many business owners, and perhaps for you, you choose your topic about five minutes before you’re supposed to publish the post. This is a high stress way to blog and it’s probably not doing your business, or your readers, justice.
The Perks of Planning
One of the benefits of planning ahead is that you don’t have to create a last minute blog idea. Instead, you can create a month’s worth of blog ideas and strategically tie them into launches, promotions, and generate new income. Consider sitting down and planning out a month’s worth of blog topics. Perhaps that sounds challenging. So let’s take a look at some ways to help you decide what to blog about.
#1 Consider a Series
A series of blog posts under the same general topic accomplishes several things. The first is that it makes it easy for you to decide what to blog about. If you have a 10 part series or a 20 part series then you instantly have the next 10-20 topics. Additionally, when you create a blog series you’ll pull readers to your blog to read day after day.
#2 Add Structure
Another way to make it easier to decide what to blog about is to create a bit of structure to your blog. For example, on Mondays you might post a “how to” blog post and on Fridays you might post a video. Brainstorm the possibilities and look at what other bloggers are doing – it’s a good way to generate your own ideas.
#3 Embrace the Crowd
Head over to your social media comments, posts, and interactions. If you’re active on social media then chances are you have some lengthy conversations. If you’re “chatty” then you probably have some long posts as well. Use those to create blog topic ideas. For example, perhaps you received a question from a reader or fan today. Your answer could be the foundation for a blog post tomorrow, or a blog post series – see #1.
Finally, consider creating a backlog of content. You might purchase PLR or hire a ghostwriter to write a bundle of blog posts. This backlog of content can help you in a pinch, which is to say that if you insist on blogging by the seat of your pants, you have a backup plan if you’re stumped for a topic.
Seriously, sit down and create a long list of topics. Structure them so they make sense and so you have enough content ideas for a month or two. Then set your focus on writing and creating those blog posts. Planning ahead really does make a difference.
